Laughing Your Stress Away

Stress! Have you gone a week without feeling the effects of stress in your life? Living thru 2020 and into 2021, you are probably very familiar with it.

Stress has become an accepted, just like getting dressed to go to work, we are going to experience stress today. If stress is accepted as being normal, then so too is normal all the negative consequences that stress brings with it; and there are many. For a few, stress can lead to an emotional outburst, while prolonged stress can lead to mental and physical health issues.

Because most people want to relieve themselves of their stress, they may begin using negative coping strategies like drug and alcohol use for the purpose of calming themselves down. Since most people are not aware they can learn to control stress, instead they find temporary ways to feel better for a while like drug use, which never addresses the real problem, what is causing the stress? Their solution distracts them for a while but the problem continues.

What if there is a way to deal with your stress to where when you feel it, you could stop it. Would you be interested?

The thing about stress is that it actually stores in your body as tension, especially in the shoulders and neck. This tension is created when your muscles tighten during times of stress and then remain tightened long after the stressful event is over. Now you need a massage.

The beginning point in learning to control your stress begins by recognizing and interrupting it momentarily, breaking its hold on you. And although it is temporary, you just learned you have the power to interrupt the hold stress has on you. The next step is to control stress.

As a person who has helped many people learn to control their emotions, overcoming stress begins with learning how to interrupt it.

One of the things you can do is learn to laugh more. Laugh as long as you can and as hard as you can. When was the last time you experienced a full on belly laugh? Have you ever tried to be angry at someone when they made you laugh? Where did your anger go? The laughter overpowered it.

It is no different with stress. Stress, like anger, is pushed aside when you laugh! Opposite emotions like stress and feeling happy cannot happen at the same time. There is only room for one of them. Laughter also causes you let go of the tension in your body naturally.

Not only does laughter interrupt the negative emotion of stress, laughter replaces it with positive emotions like joy, feeling happy and positive energy.  The laughter releases chemicals called endorphins in your brain. With laughter you help break the connection stress has on your thinking and behavior.

You can find many ways to laugh. I prefer a good comedy on TV or at the movies. I have some favorites and play them regularly. There are funny stories you can read and joke books. Playing with your kids or even your dog can put a smile on your face. These will break the spell of stress. Next comes the learning to control it.

By the way, why is it that many people have forgotten the power of laughter? Now we need it more than ever with the level of stress and anger people are feeling today, 2021.

Ever notice how often little children laugh, even laughing at the simplest of things. Help us all to be more childlike, so we can laugh more.

To me there is no picture so beautiful as smiling, bright-eyed, happy children; no music so sweet as their clear and ringing laughter.
