Laughing Your Stress Away

Stress! Have you gone a week without feeling the effects of stress in your life?If yes, you were probably on vacation at the time.

Stress has become accepted by most people as a normal part of life, just like getting dressed to go to work. If we accept stress as being normal, then so too are all the negative consequences that stress brings with it; and there are many. Stress can lead to emotional outburst, and prolonged stress to mental health issues.

Because most people want to relieve themselves of their stress, they may begin using drugs and drinking alcohol for the main purpose of calming themselves down. Since most people are not aware, they can control stress, they find ways to feel better for a while, like drug use, which never addresses what is causing the stress. Their solution distracts them for a while.

What if there is a way to deal with your stress to where when you feel it, you could stop it, would you be interested?

The thing about stress is that it actually stores in the body as tension, especially in the shoulders and neck. This tension is created when your muscles tighten during times of stress, and then remain tightened long after the stressful event is over.

The beginning point in learning to control your stress begins by interrupting it – momentarily breaking its hold. And although it is temporary, you have learned you have the power to interrupt the hold of stress. As a person who has helped people learn to control their emotions, and has written a book about it, learning to overcome stress begins with learning how to interrupt it.

One of the first things you can do is laugh. Laugh as long as you can and as hard as you can. When was the last time you experienced a full on belly laugh? Have you ever tried to be angry at someone when they made you laugh? Where did your anger go? The laughter overpowered it.

It is no different with stress. Stress, like anger, is pushed aside when you laugh!Opposite emotions like stress and feeling happy cannot happen at the same time. There is only room for one of them. Laughter also causes you let go of the tension naturally.

The way to start to start learning to control stress is by learning come simple techniques that will help you in interrupting your stress. Interrupting the stress leads to feeling calm and more in control.

Not only does laughter interrupt the negative emotion of stress, what you are feeling; laughter replaces it with a positive emotion, feeling happy or uplifted.  The laughter releases chemicals called endorphins in your brain. With laughter, you have temporally broken the connection stress has on your thinking and behavior. The laughter produces endorphins in your brain, which results in positive feelings.

You can find many ways to laugh. I prefer a good comedy on TV or at the movies. I have some favorites and play them regularly. There are funny stories you can read and joke books. Playing with your kids, or even your dog can put a smile on your face, both of which will break the spell of stress.

By the way, why is it that many people have forgotten the power of laughter? Now it is time to get to it. Have a good laugh today.

Ever notice how often little children laugh, even laughing at the simplest of things. Help us all to be more childlike, so we can laugh more.

To me there is no picture so beautiful as smiling, bright-eyed, happy children; no music so sweet as their clear and ringing laughter.
